It’s opening night and everything’s a disaster. Props are missing, wardrobe’s a shambles, and Rob and Greta are barking conflicting orders at everyone. They’re all on edge, but Ruby’s expression is especially frantic.

“Hey,” Hector says as they’re standing in the wings, waiting to go on. “It’s going to be fine. We’ve got this.”

It’s a packed house, and the audience is buzzing like a swarm of angry bees on the other side of the curtain.

Ruby bites her lip and shakes her head. “I can’t remember my lines.”

Hector recognizes that particular flavor of fear; he’s seen it plenty of times before. He takes her hand, squeezing gently. “Sure you can. You’ve got this.”

She looks up at him. Her fingers are trembling in his. “How do you know?”

“I just do. Trust me.”

She does. The curtain opens, the adrenaline takes over, and everything’s fine, just like he said it would be. There’s only one rough spot, when Matt drops one of his lines, but Ruby covers for him and no one even notices.

When they stumble offstage after the last curtain call, Hector’s heart is still pounding from the rush of it all. Matt claps him on the shoulder and disappears to change out of his wardrobe, but Ruby is standing in front of him and she’s positively glowing, so beautiful it makes Hector’s chest ache.

She lunges forward, throwing her arms around his neck, and laughs in childlike delight.

Hector stiffens for a second, then lets himself enjoy it. He puts his arms around her and lives inside the moment, appreciating the warmth of her body and the feeling of it next to his.

“That was fun!” she says, bouncing on her toes.

Hector can’t help but agree.
